RIP Ruth Bader Ginsburg - there will be no one like you ever again
RIP #RGB #ruthbaderginsburg
⚖️ A light in the dark & constant defender of equity at law.
It’s an understatement to say that she will he sorely missed from the Supreme Court.
Some characteristics I admired about her -
🌟 future thinking & steadfast (her ability to dissent in a decision to influence future decisions)
🌟 Strategic & influential (her ability to persuade her audience in a carefully crafted way)
Two examples of these qualities below & in the comments👇
1️⃣ “As the chief architect of the battle for women's legal rights, she devised a strategy that was characteristically cautious..💥 Knowing she had to persuade male, establishment-oriented judges, she chose Social Security cases to show how discrimination vs women harms men. She represented a man whose wife, the principal breadwinner, died in childbirth. He sought survivor's benefits to care for his child. Under the then-existing Social Security law, only widows, not widowers got benefits.
🗣”This absolute exclusion, based on gender per se, operates to the disadvantage of female workers, their surviving spouses, & their children," The Supreme Court ultimately agreed in 5 of the 6 cases she argued.”
2️⃣ “In 2013, when the court struck down a key provision of the Voting Rights Act, saying times had changed & the law was no longer needed, she dissented. 🗣” throwing out the provision when it has worked & is continuing to work ... is like throwing away your umbrella in a rainstorm because you are not getting wet." 💥She viewed her dissents as a chance to persuade a future court. 🗣 “Some of my favorite opinions are dissenting opinions. ... I will not live to see what becomes of them, but I remain hopeful."
